Someone Did Us A Major Favor

Faithfully by Journey came out in 1983 and Purple Rain by Prince came out in 1984. For the song Faithfully, it always carries this little anecdote that after recording Purple Rain — Prince called Johnathan Cain to talk about the song. Prince told Cain that the chord changes of his song Purple Rain sound similar to “Faithfully.”

and upon hearing it, Cain not only had no problem with the changes, but was blown away by what he heard. “I thought it was an amazing tune,” Cain said, “and I told him, ‘Man, I’m just super-flattered that you even called. It shows you’re that classy of a guy. Good luck with the song. I know it’s gonna be a hit.’” – As Cain recalled.

Initially, Prince called because he doesn’t want to get sued. But since it was all good, now we got ourselves two timeless legendary songs. Unfortunately, we can never see a live version of the two songs sand side by side. But we got the next best thing! Youtuber Alvin Oon made a mashup of the two songs side by side.
