1978: Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers Completely Won Everyone Over

40 years ago, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers had a history-making performance at the Bill Graham venue The Winterland Ballroom. This live show was recorded a little over a year before the Heartbreakers would release their 1979 breakout album Damn The Torpedoes. If you need any proof that  Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers was one of the best trad-rock acts of the ‘70s, then this performance is all you the proof you need. They were even introduced by legendary San Francisco promoter Bill Graham himself!

Petty and his band surely gave the audience a once-in-a-lifetime experience in this show with a memorable set that included a six-minute performance of “Fooled Again”, along with other favorites such as “Dark End of the Street”, “American Girl,” “Breakdown” “Too Much Ain’t Enough” and many more.
