It is no secret to anyone that the zenith of the Southern Rock genre was the 70s and that with time it has had a decline at least in the media in the rest of the world, nevertheless, it is still being produced and listened to in greater o lesser measure. Below are some of the southern rock groups that have left their mark in the world during the 80s:
.38 Special
From Jacksonville, Florida was created in 1974 by Don Barnes and Donnie Van Zant, who remained with the band until 2013, the year in which he left the spotlight due to health problems. 38 special has several very good albums, especially during the ’80s, during that time Wild-Eyed Southern Boys (1981), Special Forces (1982), and Strength in Numbers (1986) appeared, although -almost- their entire discogradía it’s pretty good.
Blackfoot
We go back to Florida and the intermittent lineups, now we do it with this group that like BOA has had dozens of members, although its classic lineup consists of Rickey Medlocke, Charlie Hargrett, Greg T. Walker, and Jackson Spiers. During their first years of activity, they could score some hits like the albums Strikes (1979), Tomcattin ‘(1980), and Marauder (1981), although Siogo from 1983 is not so bad either.
Kentucky Headhunters
Maybe one of the lesser-known bands on this list but one of the coolest. The Kentucky Headhunters began their adventures in the late sixties as Itchy Brother until 1982, however, some years later, in 1986 to be exact, they returned with a new name and with great success after the publication of Pickin ‘on Nashville. (1989), his most recognized album and in which we find songs like Walk Softly on This Heart of Mine, Dumas Walker, Oh Lonesome Me, and other great songs.
The Georgia Satellites
Direct from Atlanta comes to this band known for its great success Keep Your Hands to Yourself, a song released in 1986. The Georgia Satellites have also had a fairly interrupted career, but since ’93 they have been ‘active.’
Molly Hatchet
The band started in Florida and since 1971 they have not stopped, although there was a forced pause when their founder, Dave Hlubek died in 2017 and although since 2012 they have not released new record material, they are still on tour. The most celebrated album is the double-platinum Flirtin ‘with Disaster of 1979, but there is another very good work such as Beatin’ the Odds (1980).
