RESCUE IS ON IT’S WAY

A 41-year-old passenger on LAMB OF GOD’s Headbangers Boat cruise went overboard, and a search operation is currently underway, according to cruise line Norwegian Cruise Line.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, November 3, 2023, as the Norwegian Pearl was sailing near the Bahamas en route to Miami, according to a spokesperson for the cruise line. The spokesperson stated, “On the early morning of Friday, Nov. 3, 2023, Norwegian Pearl was notified that a 41-year-old male guest went overboard while the ship was sailing near the Bahamas on its way to Miami. The authorities have been notified, and the United States Coast Guard search and rescue operation is underway. The investigation is ongoing, and we will share updates as appropriate. Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones during this difficult time.”

LAMB OF GOD expressed their condolences in a separate statement, saying, “We’re deeply saddened to have learned that a member of our community was involved in a tragic incident. Sending love and light to their family and loved ones.”

The U.S. Coast Guard is currently conducting a search for the missing individual, who was last seen 20 miles east of Cay Say Bahamas at around 4 a.m. The Coast Guard is collaborating with the Royal Bahamas Defense Force in this search and rescue operation.

Reports Are Coming In

Reports from passengers on the Headbangers Boat cruise shed light on the incident. One passenger shared on social media, “Update – around 3:45 am, the cruise ship we are on, NCL Pearl – Headbangers Boat, had called a code Oscar starboard side and confirmed approximately 30 minutes later. The ship has been in a search pattern for the man overboard since then. No luck. Overboard survival rates are slim. We have no news on whether he jumped or fell. But intoxication was surely a factor. Scary and sad. The whole boat of headbangers is a somber one today.”

Another account from a passenger’s perspective indicated, “My son is on this Headbangers Boat tour, and this morning security was chasing a guy, and he jumped from a higher deck towards the back of the boat, and went overboard.”

Cruise Critic highlights that there are no specific government statistics regarding the frequency of overboard incidents on cruise ships, with approximately 20 such incidents reported annually. Survival rates depend on various factors, including the individual’s condition upon entering the water, the swiftness of rescue efforts by the cruise ship crew or the Coast Guard, weather conditions, and sea temperature. Hypothermia can become a concern if the water temperature falls below 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

The Headbangers Boat, which includes performances by bands like LAMB OF GOD, MASTODON, HATEBREED, GWAR, and others, embarked on its maiden voyage on October 31 from Miami, Florida, bound for Nassau, Bahamas, aboard the Norwegian Pearl. The cruise featured non-stop live music on multiple stages, as well as a range of activities hosted by LAMB OF GOD members, including a Q&A session, photography exhibition, drum-off, and casino tournament.
