Flying can be a stressful experience, and flight delays can only add to that stress. However, passengers on a flight from Indianapolis to New Orleans were in for a treat when an elderly barbershop quartet put on an impromptu performance to keep everyone’s spirits up during a five-hour delay.
Flight attendant Kari Mann was on the lookout for ways to keep the passengers happy and calm during the delay. She stumbled upon the Port City Sound, an elderly barbershop quartet, consisting of Walt Dowling, Fred Moore, Jim Curtiss, and Jim Simpson, who all had a combined barbershop experience of over a century. The quartet was on the same flight, and Mann seized the opportunity to ask them if they would be willing to perform for the passengers.
The quartet happily obliged and put on a heartwarming performance, with Dowling taking the lead, and the other members providing harmonies to the Drifters classic “Under the Boardwalk.” The passengers were treated to a unique and uplifting experience, with many of them smiling and tapping their feet along to the music.
The performance was recorded by Mann and uploaded to YouTube, where it quickly went viral. Watch the video below:
The Port City Sound barbershop quartet members are all retired, but they still love to perform and entertain people. They have performed in various venues across Maine, and their performance on the flight from Indianapolis to New Orleans was just another feather in their cap.
The video of their performance has been viewed by millions of people, and it serves as a reminder that even in the most challenging of times, there is always something to be grateful for and a reason to smile. The Port City Sound barbershop quartet may have delayed the flight, but they brought joy and happiness to the passengers, and that’s a memory that they will cherish for a long time.
