Lindsey Buckingham spills the beans on what really happened in the drama that has been surrounding him and Stevie Nicks as he made his exit from Fleetwood Mac this last spring.

Earlier this year, tensions and drama ensued when Manager Irving Azoff reportedly contacted Buckingham to tell him that Stevie Nicks had given the band an ultimatum: either Buckingham leaves or she will.

The Fleetwood Mac guitarist says in an interview with Rolling Stone,

“Stevie never wants to be on a stage with you again,”  Buckingham recalls Azoff proceeding to tell him a series of issues Stevie apparently had with him during a MusiCares benefit show honoring the group.

One of these rumored issues included a disagreement over the band’s intro music to “Rhiannon” and his alleged sarcastic reaction during her speech at the said event.

“It wasn’t about it being ‘Rhiannon,’ ” explains Buckingham. “It just undermined the impact of our entrance. That’s me being very specific about the right and wrong way to do something.”

Addressing his smirk during Stevie’s speech, he adds “The irony is that we have this standing joke that Stevie, when she talks, goes on a long time. I may or may not have smirked. But I look over and Christine and Mick are doing the waltz behind her as a joke.”

Furthermore, Buckingham shares his sentiments regarding his exit, saying,

“Am I heartbroken about not doing another tour with Fleetwood Mac? No. Because I can see that there are many other areas to look into.”

He continues,  “The one thing that does bother me and breaks my heart is we spent 43 years always finding a way to rise above our personal differences and our difficulties to pursue and articulate a higher truth. That is our legacy. That is what the songs are about. This is not the way you end something like this.”
