Micky Dolenz, the talented rocker from The Monkees, has given music lovers a delightful surprise by releasing his cover of R.E.M.’s timeless classic “Shiny Happy People.”

This vibrant rendition is part of Dolenz’s upcoming tribute EP, “Dolenz Sings R.E.M.,” set to be released on November 3.

In a statement accompanying the single release, Dolenz expressed his enthusiasm for this exciting project, stating:

“Once again, this EP reaffirms my long-held conviction that a solid recording always begins with solid material. You don’t get much more solid than R.E.M. What a joy to sing these classics and honor a team of outstanding writers.”

Originally released by R.E.M. in 1991, “Shiny Happy People” became a chart-topping hit and remains one of the band’s most iconic songs.

Dolenz’s cover maintains the track’s upbeat and cheerful vibe while infusing it with his unique style. The accompanying music video, compiled from Dolenz’s home movie footage, adds a nostalgic touch to the beloved song.

But what inspired Micky Dolenz to embark on this R.E.M. tribute project?

The idea came from Glenn Gretlund, co-owner of 7A Records, a UK label known for remastering and re-releasing Monkees’ material. Dolenz explained that the suggestion immediately caught his attention:

“I was talking to Glenn about what to do next. The band R.E.M. came up. I went, ‘Wow, that’s very cool.’ I’m a big fan. I remember their stuff very well. And I’ve heard through the grapevine that the band were fans of the Monkees. I found that incredibly flattering.”

While “Shiny Happy People” became somewhat polarizing for R.E.M., with the band eventually discontinuing live performances of the song, lead singer Michael Stipe has eagerly endorsed Dolenz’s interpretation. Stipe shared his excitement, saying,

“Micky Dolenz covering R.E.M. Monkees style, I have died and gone to heaven… ‘Shiny Happy People’ sounds incredible (never thought you or I would hear me say that!!!). Give it a spin. It’s wild. And produced by Christian Nesmith (son of Michael Nesmith). I am finally complete.”

Micky Dolenz’s fresh take on “Shiny Happy People” is sure to delight fans of both The Monkees and R.E.M., offering a vibrant fusion of two musical worlds that will put a smile on your face.
