The tranquil town of Silsbee, Texas recently witnessed an extraordinary and somewhat bizarre event that left a local woman injured and startled. Peggy Jones, a 64-year-old resident, found herself in the midst of an unlikely encounter between a hawk and a snake while tending to her routine task of mowing her lawn.
A Duel Between Predators
On a warm July day, Peggy Jones’s day took a surprising turn when a wriggling snake suddenly plummeted from the sky and landed on her. As Jones recounted the incident to CBS News, what began as an unexpected snake encounter escalated rapidly into an astonishing duel between two predators.
The hawk, identifying the snake as potential prey, descended swiftly to reclaim its unintended drop. What followed was a tense struggle that left Jones with more than just a story to tell. The snake, entwining itself around Jones’s arm, launched strikes towards her face in an attempt to defend itself. Meanwhile, the hawk, determined to retrieve its unintended meal, aggressively targeted Jones with its talons.
Describing the frantic scene to BBC’s US partner CBS, Jones shared, “The snake was striking in my face, it struck my glasses a couple of times… I was slinging and slinging, he was striking and striking, and he just kept hanging on. Then the hawk appeared just as fast as the snake appeared. The hawk grabbed the snake that was wrapped around my arm and pulled it like he was going to carry it away. Jones bore significant injuries, including puncture wounds, cuts, abrasions, scratches, and severe bruising, especially on her arm and face. Even her eyeglasses bore evidence of the snake’s strikes.
Despite the traumatic ordeal, Jones emerged from the encounter with a newfound perspective on the intricate dynamics of nature. While hawks hunting snakes is not unheard of, the rarity of witnessing a hawk drop a snake onto a human and engage in a struggle for its meal remains unparalleled.
