It seems incredible, but it is true: in the mid-1970s, Pink Floyd starred in an advertising campaign for Dole Food Company bananas. By then, Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Richard Wright, and Nick Mason were looking for opportunities to capitalize on their rise in the rock scene and made somewhat unexpected decisions.
In 1974, the British were about to embark on their European tour to promote their album The Dark Side of the Moon. With the noble aim that the tour could be financed without the need to raise ticket prices through the roof, the musicians decided to be ambassadors for various brands. It was then that they agreed to be the face of a campaign for a French drink called “Gini”. Within a few months, the aforementioned fruit company also approached them.
The American company wanted to use the song “The Great Gig in the Sky”, which had been released by Pink Floyd in 1973. According to the entrepreneurs, this melody would help them give a spicy approach to the advertising of their bananas.
